Oregon Parks and Recreation Rangers
We love our Oregon Parks and Recreation Rangers! We don't have enough room here to list all the important jobs these ORPD Rangers perform on a daily basis! The most important tasks the Rangers perform are usually quite visible to visitors such as: tours, park maintenance, which includes nearly 2 miles of park trails, overseeing ambitious park improvement projects and of course, maintaining the historic dredge itself. In addition to these tasks, Park Rangers conduct tours through the dredge and the surrounding park.
Fortunately, the rangers are aided in their duties by State Park Volunteer Hosts who live on State grounds throughout the summer season and perform various tasks, such as, working in the gift store and throughtout the Park as needed. The Park Host also conducts daily tours which are very popular with our visitors, opens and closes the park each day and also performs general maintenance chores throughout the park. Our Park Hosts can often be seen anywhere in the park speaking with visitors. There are usually two sets of volunteer hosts each season. If you are interested in becoming a Park Host, call {541} 894-2486 for more information or send Ranger Miranda Miller an email: miranda.miller@state.or.us Visitors will find our Park Rangers helpful and full of interesting information regarding the Dredge. In addition to conducting tours, Ranger Miranda Miller also conducts training classes for Friends of the Dredge board members and local residents who wish to volunteer at the Dredge. Miranda can be reached year round in her Sumpter office. Guided tours are not required to see the Dredge...however, you can arrange a guided tour with a Park Ranger by calling Miranda at: {541} 894-2486 or sending her an email. The next time you visit the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area, be sure to thank our Park Rangers and vounteers for their hard work! We would like to welcome Intern Sarah Steen to Sumpter! Sarah has a background in historic preservation which will make her fit right in with the preservation work at the Dredge! She will be busy researching and working on preservation of the Dredge Superintendents House and other various projects on the Dredge. We would like to thank Sarah for aiding in the preservation work of the Dredge. If you meet Sarah down at the Dredge, be sure to thank her for efforts! |
