
The Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area is not only home to the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, but surrounding the dredge is about 77 acres of State Heritage Area, made up of natural habitat! And.......a Day Use Area too - free of charge! Visitors will discover plenty of natural beauty tucked away next to the historic gold town of Sumpter....in the Elkhorn Mountains! Nature has re-claimed the dredge tailings over the years! The State Park is now full of wildlife, many species of trees and flowers, and several trails just waiting to be explored! In fact....the State is now maintaining a salmon habitat within the park! Take advantage of the convenient day use park located next to the Sumpter Train Depot to park your RV, tour the dredge, then enjoy the many trails that wind throughout the park! Leave your vehicle parked at the day use area and ride the train, or....pan for gold in the river (prospecting permits are required.) The day-use area is sprinkled with picnic tables, benches, even a fire pit (when fire is permitted.) From the day use area, you can hear and see the train come into the depot, see the dredge. The day use area is a good place to begin your exploring....of the park or even Sumpter!
